The reading test after the theory exam

If you pass your theory and do not yet have a driver's license, you will immediately take a reading test at the exam center. These are the rules and the standard.

If you pass your theory exam and do not yet have a driver's license, you will immediately take a reading test at the exam center: a simple vision test that checks whether your visual acuity is sufficient to drive safely. The standard for driver's license B is a visual acuity of at least 5/10 with both eyes together, possibly with glasses or contact lenses. Those who already have a driver's license or a provisional license do not need to take the test.

How does the reading test proceed?

The test is conducted immediately at the counter by a staff member of the exam center. You look into an optical device where letters or symbols of different sizes appear. You may take the test with your regular glasses or contact lenses, provided you also wear them while driving. If you pass, the examiner will note that on your application document for the provisional license.

The minimum standard: 5/10

The legal requirement for driver's license B (group 1) is a visual acuity of at least 5/10 with both eyes together, if necessary with correction. If you only use one eye in practice, or if there is a significant difference between your eyes, stricter standards apply, which are assessed by the ophthalmologist.

What if you do not pass?

If you do not meet the standard, your theory exam is not invalid: your theoretical result remains valid for 3 years. However, you must first have your vision checked before you receive your provisional license. The steps:

  • You consult an ophthalmologist of your choice for a comprehensive measurement.
  • The ophthalmologist checks whether an adapted pair of glasses or contact lenses will bring you to the required score.
  • The ophthalmologist provides a certificate according to the prescribed model, possibly with conditions (for example, mandatory wearing of glasses, or only driving in daylight).
  • You submit that certificate to the exam center, after which you will still receive your documents.
